Spurs manager Jose Mourinho told Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp that “The best team lost” at Anfield in the Premier League on Wednesday night, and statistics say he could be right.
Spurs visited the reigning champions in a game that would determine who would rank first in the Premier League table, but it was Liverpool who finished at the top of the division after Roberto Firmino headed home with a goal from victory in the 89th minute.
Mourinho was seen disappointed in the 2-1 loss after the final whistle. Besides telling Klopp directly that his Spurs team was the best team, he later insisted to reporters that he wouldn’t even be happy with a draw.
I don’t think even a draw would have left us with the best taste because we had them there to win
– Jose Mourinho to reporters post-match
Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has already responded to the claim on his Instagram account, captioning an image of the Reds celebrating Firmino’s late goal with the message “Best team won.”
And a quick look at the starting statistics suggests that Liverpool were the best team at Anfield. They had 17 shots to the Spurs eight, enjoyed 76% possession versus 24% of the visitors, completed a higher percentage of their passes, dribbled more, won more headers, and took more corners.
However, more detailed statistics paint a slightly different story. While Spurs only had eight Liverpool goal attempts, four of them were categorized as “great chances” compared to none of the Reds.
The meaning of this name cannot be expressed simply in words. This treble can be said to be an adorable item for any club. A treble club victory is only completed when they achieve 3 trophies in a single season. A club will be a treble only if it wins the UEFA Champions League, the national league, and the national cup at the same time in one season. It is quite difficult to win 3 trophies in one season. That is why any club needs to play well throughout the season. A single mistake can destroy Treble’s dream.
However, seven clubs have made this impossible possible, in which only Barcelona and Bayern have won the treble twice. As always, two teams have a chance to win Treble. Let’s take a look at the seven clubs that have won the treble in history.
Celtic FC – (1966-1967)
Scottish club Celtic F.C. won the Treble for the first time in soccer history. With famed coach Jock Stein, Celtic won three league titles in the 1966-67 season. In April of the season, Celtic won the Scottish Cup by defeating Aberdeen. On the other hand, after a fierce battle with rival Rangers F.C., Celtic won the league title with Jock Stein.
On the other hand, for the first time, Celtic played in an elite competition like the European Cup. Although new to the competition, no club can beat Celtic. The team completed its Agudos mission by beating Inter Milan 2-1 in the final. Not only these three titles, but Celtic also won the Scottish Cup and the Glasgow Cup. The team surprised everyone by winning all five titles.
In addition to winning the title, the club also achieved a few different records. In that season, all Celtic players were from Scotland. No club has been so successful playing with all the players from the same country. Even Celtic became the first British club to win the European Cup. The club has scored a record 196 goals throughout the season.
AFC Ajax – (1971-1972)
Ajax has won the lovable treble in the 1971-72 season while having another chance in 2018-2019. But sadly they ended up doubling, not tripling. However, the current ajax is not the same as the old ajax. This Dutch club was one of the best in Europe at that time. They won the European Cup in three consecutive seasons from 1970 to 1972. But they won the treble only in the middle of the year.
Johan Cruyff, Johan Neeskens, and Piet Keizer were spending their golden days at Ajax. Ajax had a golden opportunity to get the treble by winning a European club after winning the cup and the national league on May 11, 1972. Ajax was not wrong to seize that opportunity. The Dutch club Ajax achieved the treble for the first time by defeating Inter Milan with a pair of goals from Cruyff.
Another Dutch club, PSV Eindhoven, had a chance to win the treble after Ajax. PSV Eindhoven got the treble 16 years later, the triple victory of their eternal rival, Ajax. Under the leadership of legendary coach Guus Hiddink and with the help of iconic Ronald Koeman player Edward Linskens, Dutch club PSV Eindhoven claimed all three titles that season.
Following the league title with a difference of nine points, PSV beat Roda JC Kerkrade with a 3-2 goals. In that league, PSV Eindhoven’s ball touched the opposing team’s goal line 117 times. On the other hand, in the European Cup, they defeat Galatasaray S.K., First Vienna F.C., F.C. Girondins de Bordeaux, and Real Madrid and faced S.L. Benfica in the final. In that match in Stuttgart (Mercedes-Benz Arena), neither team could score a goal in the first 120 minutes and the match ended in a tiebreaker. PSV won the European Cup for the first time by defeating Benfica 6-5 in the tiebreaker. Furthermore, it is the only European Cup that PSV Eindhoven has won.
Manchester United F.C. – (1998-99)
Manchester United F.C. is the only English club to win the Premier League, F.A. Cup, and Champions League in one season. Manchester United failed to win any titles in the previous season, reaching the Champions League as an underdog. Sir Alex Ferguson’s players won the Premier League title by one point on the final day in a fierce battle with Arsenal throughout the season. On the other hand, in the F.A. Cup ManU defeated big clubs like Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, etc.
Manchester United gave a legendary performance in that Champions League. Until minute 40, they were 3-1 behind in the semi-final of the second leg against Juventus. After winning the match 4-3, they were left with their real surprise for the final. Bayern Munich led 1-0 in that match, but the Red Devils won the match with the goal in the 91st and 93rd minutes. And they confirmed their treble title.
Barcelona is one of the only 2 clubs that has won the treble twice. Barça won for the first time with Pep Guardiola. The tremendous performance of Messi, Xavi, and Iniesta brought this great success to the club. Barcelona is considered by many to be the best club team of all time but the reality is always different!
Six years later, the Catalans won the Treble again. This time, with the help of the trio Messi, Neymar, and Suárez, Barcelona won the three great titles. They won the League by two points and beat Athletic Bilbao 3-1 in the Copa del Rey final. On the other hand, they won the Champions League final against Juventus with a 3-1 goal. And that is the second time that Barcelona has won the treble.
The world saw a new club win treble after Barcelona’s first treble win. On this occasion, the Italian club Inter Milan won this honor. With José Mourinho, the Nerazzurri won the Scudetto with two points more than A.S. Roma. Inter Milan beat the same rival 1-0 in the Coppa Italia.
To win the Champions League, Inter Milan had to face one of the best clubs of the time, Barcelona, in the semi-final. But with Mourinho’s tactic, Inter Milan went on to the final, winning that match 3-2. Diego Milito’s pair of goals helped Inter Milan beat Bayern Munich and win the treble.
F.C. Bayern Munich – (2012-13 and 2019-2020)
In the previous season, the Bavarians lost to Chelsea in a playoff in front of their fans at the Allianz Arena. But Bayern Munich came back the following season with great force and won the treble. In the Bundesliga, Jupp Heynckes’ side beat all opponents and scored 25 more points than Dortmund. In the DFB-Pokal final, Robben-Ribéry’s team beat VfL Wolfsburg 3-2.
In the semi-final of the Champions League, Bayern Munich beat Barcelona with a total of 7-0 goals in the first leg and the second leg. Then Bayern faced another German club, Dortmund, in the final. With Arjen Robben’s goal at the last minute, they won the final 2-1 which made Bayern Munich the seventh treble-winning club.
The 2019-2020 season with the Coronavirus pandemic has created no difference to the Bavarians. FC Barcelona were thrashed by Bayern on their Quarter-final clash with humiliation to Barca as they lost 8-2. PSG looked to the two great superstars Neymar and Mbappe to spearhead their assault on the trophy they crave most after such lavish investment.
But they were unable to break down the Bayern Munich barrier. Bayern’s status as European champion has been to win every game of the tournament this season, not only to defeat Barcelona 8–2 in the quarter-finals and PSG’s ability to put up such spectacular performances in the final. This is a developing team and Bayern’s future looks bright under Flick.
The pair of Paris Saint Germain’s Neymar, Levin Kurzawa, and Leandro Paredes, as well as Marseille duo Dario Benetto and Jordan Amavi, were given their marching orders after their players punched and kicked each other.
The Olympic Marseille pulsed in the 31st minute at the Parc des Princes on Sunday, though in the ill-tempered match, ahead of Florian Théuvin in the 31st minute, a 1–0 win over Lish 1 champion Paris Saint Germain. With the foul throughout, a full-scale brawl broke out on the pitch after sending five players along with boiled referee Jerome Brisard in the final minutes of the truce.
But it did not bother Marseille manager Andre Villa-Bose as the 1993 European Cup winners celebrated their first league win against PSG since November 2011.
Villa-Bose, after condemning last season’s Champions League runners-up defeat 1–0 after their second consecutive defeat, told reporters “a tough and important win with a historic as well as a historic win.”
“We struggled to withstand the initial pressure of PSG because they are very good at it, but we found a way to get a convincing win. It was not very beautiful and we were suffering. “
Thauvin scored against a run of play, steering home side pass through Marco Veratti and Neymar into the Dimitri Payet free-kick near the pass post, who also missed a pair in the second half.
Keeper Steve Mandanda scored a great goal before the goal from both sides and a gear went up after the break.
Angel Di Maria’s effort for PSG was dismissed in the 62nd minute and Benetto’s scorer was also fired two minutes later, as Thauvin, who grabbed the opening shot, was a slight back from the previous PSG defender.
Recalling several first-team regulars who contracted the COVID-19 virus, PSG worked hard in the closing stages but remained with Marseille’s rude defense firm.
Former PSG sports director Leonardo, who was a World Cup winner with Brazil, criticized the referee’s actions.
“A total of 14 cards were branded and five of them were red, meaning the match went out of control,” Leonardo told the Telefoot television channel.
Brisard lost his head. He competed in the final of the League Cup but he does not have experience for such consistency.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to score 101 international goals for Portugal on Tuesday against 10-seed Sweden. In the UEFA Nations League match against Sweden, the Great 100 mark was broken just before the half-time interval.
Portugal v Sweden
The 35-year-old Legendary attacker hit a free-kick 25 yards and a free-kick from the wall beyond Sweden’s stranded goalkeeper Robin Olson for a memorable milestone in his trophy-laden career. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid player produced a stunning finish in the 72nd minute after returning inside the Swedish defense and in the corner 20 yards away with his 101st, bonus goal.
After making his first senior international appearance as an 18-year-old in 2003, Ronaldo scored his first goal for Portugal, defeating eventual winner Greece 2–1 at Euro 2004. Ronaldo, 165 caps by Portugal, is 2nd on the list of top male international goal scorers behind Iran’s Ali Dae, who scored 109 goals in his international career.
Interestingly for Ronaldo, 17 of his 101 goals have come in friendly matches, and nine of his hat-tricks have come in all FIFA or UEFA tournaments or qualifying games. He holds the record for the most goals scored by a European man (84) as well as the most goals scored in an international career (101 from 165 matches).
His 100th goal was scored at a stadium in Sweden that was the scene of a memorable Ronaldo performance in the second leg of the 2013 World Cup qualifying playoffs. Ronaldo had scored the only goal in the first leg and then exchanged goals with Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the second. Ronaldo hit a hat-trick between the 50th and 79th minutes while the Swedish star hit two in four minutes in the middle of the outburst. Portugal won the match and the playoff.
It was the night of Tuesday, August 25, when Messi informed Barça via that infamous burofax bomb that he wanted to leave the club this summer.
But the Catalan giants stood their ground, insisting that the 33-year-old was still under contract and any club interested in buying him would have to pay his € 700 million buyout clause.
Earlier this week Messi’s father, Jorge Messi, flew to Barcelona and met with his son’s lawyers before holding talks with Barça president Josep Maria Bartomeu.
Messi’s field was reportedly adamant that he wanted to leave, with Manchester City believed to be his most likely destination.
But Barça said they would take the matter to court if he breached the contract, both the club and LaLiga insisted that it was still in force for another season.
And then, on Friday, events took a surprising turn when Jorge Messi issued a statement in which he claimed that the family was convinced that the contract and the 700 million euro clause had expired and that the six-time Ballon winner Oro could leave the Camp Nou for nothing this summer. If I wanted.
Messi: “It is the club of my life, I have made my life here.”
However, it seems that he does not want or is not prepared to defend his case before a judge and therefore he will stay there, at least until the end of the 2020/21 season.
Barca fans will have a chance to say goodbye to the club’s all-time top scorer and he can look forward to a new sporting project elsewhere in 2021.
Football being played in countries of Spain, Italy, Germany, France, and England are considered as the top 5 leagues and are the most famous worldwide too. Since the 2019-2020 season of all these leagues have ended, We would like to share the champions of each region based on their respective National leagues – LaLiga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Premier League and National cups – Copa Del Rey, Coppa Italia, DFB Pokal, Coupe De France, and FA Cup.
LaLiga is considered to be the most famous of all with the likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, and co. This season Real Madrid FC has won the league with its astonishing form.
Serie A, the top-flight league in Italy concluded last week with Juventus FC winning the Scudetto for the 9th consecutive time and they celebrated with the hashtag #Stron9er.
Coppa Italia was the first to commence in Italy since the suspension of all forms of football in Italy. The cup winners Napoli faced Juventus in a fierce final and won the match 4-2 on penalties as Dybala and Danilo failed to score.
Bundesliga was the first football league to restart since the stoppage due to theCoronavirus pandemic and the first to end as well. Bayern Munich were the winners of the 2019-2020 season for the 8th consecutive season with Robert Lewandowski (Ballon d’Or contestant) scoring a whopping 34 goals against almost every opponent. He also won the “kicker Torjägerkanone” (kicker top scorer cannon) for the 3rd consecutive time.
DFB-Pokal, the German national cup, was also won by Bayern Munich with Robert Lewandowski winning the Golden Boot with 6 goals and 5 assists.
The English and French Football thread will be shared in the next post. So stay tuned 😊.
LaLiga’s current champions Real Madrid are the most valued football team for the second consecutive year even though there was a drop of 13.8% caused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The value now stands at a whopping 1,419 million Euros.
Real Madrid FC unveiled their jersey for the 2020-2021 season just a few minutes ago and here’s how it looks!
Before the commencement of football action in June, Real Madrid was placed behind Barcelona FC. The return of LaLiga has given Madrid players the much-needed time to stay and play as a team with Eden Hazard and Marco Asensio coming into the squad after suffering from injury. They have won almost every game since the restart and have been crowned LaLiga champions for the 34th time after a win against Villareal 2-1 at home.
As we have discussed already, players like Hazard and Asensio came into action with players firing from all sides. The team coached by Zinedine Zidane has become ruthless since the restart. Real Madrid have the best goalkeeper – Thibaut Courtois and the best forward since restart – Karim Benzema. These two have been sensational since the restart and have won Golden Glove and Mahou Cinco Estrellas Player the Season awards resp. Ferland Mendy has been sensational as the second choice LW (Left Wing) with the youngsters Rodrigo and Vinicius Jr too performing on the attacking perspective.
With Courtois being their No.1 Goalkeeper for Real Madrid, Areola who wants to play in the first team has to return to PSG to have game time since he is currently the 3rd choice Gk for Real Madrid.
Takefusa Kubo, the Japanese who was on loan to RCD Mallorca for the 2019/20 season, performing to his best is on the transfer list as well. He’s been sought after by many clubs including Sevilla, PSG, Real Betis, Granada, Osasuna, and Ajax. Our guess is that he’ll be joining Osasuna as they try to convince Madrid that Kubo will be the leading figure in their club’s historic centenary with Adidas as the new sponsor.
Dani Gomez and De Frutos are sent to Levante with 50% ownership for their contracts and Real Madrid reserves the right of first refusal for any offers for them.
Next Up – The UEFA Champions League
The league winners played the first leg of UCL’s Round of 16 against Manchester City and the match ended up with a scoreline of 1-2. Real Madrid will be playing the second leg against ManCity on the 8th of August. Considering their form there is a chance for a Real Madrid vs Juventus clash if both these teams go past their rivals on the second leg. Players started their training yesterday and here’s what Real Madrid FC has to post about it.
