During its WWDC 2020 keynote address, Apple announced iOS14 for iPhone and iPod touch. The update brings a variety of new features and changes. Yesterday, without any prior announcement Apple announced that iOS14 will be rolled out for public and it was. Here we’ll discuss the major features in iOS14.
New features in iOS14
Application library
iOS14 adds a new App Library view to organize all your apps. The applications are automatically organized in the application library and you don’t need to keep all the icons in view of the actual home screen. There’s also a new list view, as well as features to sort apps based on usage and more.
Widgets

iOS14 adds widgets to the iPhone and iPad home screen for the first time. Widgets have more data than ever and come in a variety of sizes. Applications are automatically out of the way to make room for widgets. You can access these widgets through the “Widget Gallery”, with many different size options.
Picture in Picture on iPhone
iOS14 also provides picture-in-picture support, it works much like the iPad experience. Meanwhile, Siri has a new interface that doesn’t go over the entire screen.
Translation app
A new translation app in iOS14 is designed for conversations and works completely offline. All you have to do is tap on the microphone icon and the app will translate to the language of your choice. There will be 11 languages supported at launch.
App clips
iOS14 also adds a new App Clip feature to easily access apps quickly without downloading the full version from the App Store.
New iMessage features
For iMessage, Apple is adding new Memoji accessories (including a new Face Mask Memoji), as well as pinned messages. New features for group iMessages too: online replies, mentions.
Real-time headphone audio alerts
You can measure headphone audio levels in real-time with a new option in the Control Center. This new feature has an interface similar to the Apple Watch Noise application, which measures the audio levels of the environment instead of the headphones.
Voice memos
Apple is also updating the Voice Memos app with iPhone and macOS Big Sur. The most interesting feature of this year is the new improved recording function. The enhanced recording function reduces background noise and room reverb with a single touch. Once you create a recording, you will see a small icon similar to the automatic adjustment feature in the Photos app. Details on how exactly this feature works are unclear, but Apple is heavily promoting the simplicity of the process.
