Former President of India and veteran of Indian politics, Pranab Mukherjee breathed his last on Monday (31 August). He was 84 years old. The information was announced by his son Abhijeet Mukherjee. The veteran politician was found to be coronavirus positive when he went to the Army Hospital for treatment. At the hospital, he underwent surgery for a blood clot in the brain.

Abhijeet tweeted, “With heavy heart, this is to inform you that my father Pranab Mukherjee has passed away despite the best efforts of doctors and prayers, prayers and prayers at RR Hospital.”

Pranab Mukherjee’s health worsened and he remained on ventilator support for days.

It was five decades in Pranab da’s political career, the highest point of which came when he became the President of India. He was in the President’s office from 2012 to 2017. But before he assumed the highest position in the land, Pranab Mukherjee was the backbone of the Indian government on more than one occasion.

He was Finance Minister, Defense Minister (2004-2006), Foreign Minister (2006-2009) between 2009 and 2012.

Pranab Mukherjee was a staunch Congressman. But this did not stop him from his duties during the years of NDA rule.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly expressed gratitude for the guidance he received from President Pranab Mukherjee during his first term in the Prime Minister’s Office.

Pranab Mukherjee was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2008 and the Bharat Ratna in 2019.
