This post is a continuation of the already published Europe’s Top 5 Football League Champions in 2020 You should know about! [Part 1]. There I had covered Spain, Italy, and Germany. Make sure you read that first ⚽. Let’s get into the topic :
Basically, England is one of the countries where Football and Cricket are equally celebrated. There are many local leagues being played in the country every year be it football or cricket. Let’s see who won their league and cup below.
Premier League also referred to as EPL is contested by the top 20 teams of England every year. This year marked the end of a very long wait of champions Liverpool FC. Last year they came very close to winning the EPL but somehow lost to the defending champions of the 2017-18 season Manchester City. They came back to winning ways this season with claiming the most precious Champions League (2018-19 season). Since the restart, they have performed well and I hope they’ll be defending the UCL this time too.
The Emirates FA Cup tournament is based on knockout matches where the teams losing will be terminated from the tournament at each and every stage as it progresses. This season’s finals was played between Chelsea and Arsenal who beat ManU and ManC resp. on their semifinal tie. Arsenal won this season’s FA finals with their topscorer Aubameyang scoring a brace. This marked their 14th FA cup – the most by any team – and a fresh to their new coach Mikel Arteta.
Coupe de France aka French cup also concluded a week ago and PSG were reigned champions after beating St-Etienne 1-0 in the finals but lose Mbappe to injury.
Teams with a chance for a Treble
A treble in football is achieved when a club team wins three trophies in a single season. A continental treble involves winning the club’s national league competition, main national cup competition, and main continental trophy. As the national cup and league competitions have come to an end this season, only PSG and Bayern Munich have a chance for this. If PSG wins the UCL (UEFA Champions League), this will be their first treble and if Bayern wins the UCL, this will be their second treble overall since the 2012-13 season.
I’ll try to publish a separate post explaining more about Treble and the teams that have done this before after the conclusion of the 2019-2020 UCL. Stay tuned and support us 😺.
